Selecting gifts for Baby's First Christmas can be very difficult, in the stores there are masses and masses of must-have toys to help develop fine motor, gross motor, speech, language and keep your baby entertained so that you can do things whilst they have fun and I'm not saying that those gifts don't have a place but it's also nice to get special gifts for your newborn or little baby that carry on giving, create memories or are lifelong gifts for Baby's First Christmas - well any Christmas at that.
Baby's First Christmas Ornaments for the Tree
We have included links on the images and blue underlined text to the gifts we recommend. If you buy via the link we may earn a small commission on the sale.
Both of my children were gifted beautiful First Christmas Ornaments as well as special ornaments for their birth year. Each year now they are older when the box of Christmas Decorations comes down they are eager to pull them out and be the first to place their special ornaments on the tree. They don't remember getting them of course but the fact is that these decorations are theirs and have special meaning to them.
One of the ornaments that they got has a photograph of them just out of the hospital. They unwrap it with great care and look, commenting to us, each other and anyone that happens to have popped in how tiny they looked and cute! Although I can't find the original version that we got here's a Handmade First Christmas Ornament which is similar from Etsy.
Classic Christmas Books to Gift a Newborn Baby for their First Christmas Presents
Instead of buying board books get some Children's classics that can first be read to the child and then as they get older are favourites that can then be read by them.
Our favourite of the three classic books is 'Twas the Night Before Christmas by Clement C Moore. As a family, we have 2 copies that are over 40 years old and then another two that are much newer. My husband copy from his first Christmas is a pop-up version and mine a classic hardcover book. We sit on Christmas Eve just before the kids go to bed and read this classic Christmas story out loud to each other.
Another favourite is The Nutcracker - we have a couple of different versions but this one by Susan Jeffers has beautiful illustrations and stays true to the ballet version of the story which we love to try and catch at Christmas time.
The last book is The Snowman by Raymond Briggs, without any words this picture book is one of my favourites. We love snuggling up on a night before Christmas with the movie on the TV and following along in our book.

Check out our selection of Christmas Board Books that you can read to your baby this year as although we love the classic Christmas books they are for the future. These board books are perfect for reading NOW!
A Nativity Sets to Start Christmas Family Traditions with your Baby
Although there are lots of different Nativity Sets and some specifically for toddlers and babies. As a gift for Baby's First Christmas then look and get not a toy but an ornament or decorative set that can be bought out once a year as a family tradition when the house is decorated.
Traditional Teddy Bear's to Celebrate 1st Christmas with your Baby
Even now well into my 30's I have Bears that I have saved from my childhood as does my husband. Some we received when we were first born and others for our first Christmas. They are prized possessions and well loved.
The start of a college Fund
It may seem a long long long way off but why not give a gift for the future and instead of buying a gift for a Baby that could be a few days old to 11 and a bit months old but really hasn't got a clue what is going on.

Give some money and instructions to open a college saving fund for the Baby so over the next 18 years further money can be added and they will be well on their way to going off to college when the time comes.
Classic Books for 1st Christmas Gifts
Why not add some classic children's literature to your baby's bookshelf. Many of the classic authors have sets that make the perfect addition and you can read together and then as they grow they can read to themselves.
Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit and other animal characters are fantastic to read aloud to your child as they grow. This classic set contains all of the stories from Peter the Rabbit through to Jeremy the Frog and Jemima Puddle-Duck. With colourful illustrations and wonderful stories, it's a great collectable for your baby as their first Christmas Gift.
It may be a few years till your child will pick up the Roald Dahl books to read themselves, but this collection of 15 classic Roald Dahl books is one that they will adore. The collection spans from the first books of his to read together like The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me and Fantastic Mr Fox through to family favourites like the BFG and Matilda.
Winnie the Pooh is a classic and this box set is a Complete Collection of all of the stories featuring this loveable bear. With the original none-Disney illustrations it is a beautiful set to read aloud and share with a child as they grow.

I'm not entering the contest, but I LOVE, Love, love the nativity set. It looks sturdy enough for little ones to explore. We have a porcelain one from before Bobo, which has survived so far (knock on wood!).
