High-Frequency Words Dino Babies Game

My eldest just clicked at reading. It was like one day he couldn’t do it and the next he was reading chapter books but T is really struggling. She hasn’t got that great a memory and remembering everything that goes into reading is tough for her. So we are playing a lot of high-frequency word games and getting really inventive to help her. This week I shared our Dino Babies Letter Game which is great for those starting to recognize letters and she really enjoyed helping her friend with that so using a similar idea we started to work on high-frequency words from her latest reading book.

Preparation needed

To print the dinosaur eggs double sided check your printer set up for double-sided printing. Complete a test print. The dinosaur babies fit inside the eggs so when printed you should have an egg that flips over to reveal the dino baby inside.

Once printed cut out around all of the eggs. If you have purchased our set then you are all ready to play one of the three suggested games. If not it’s time to get writing.

We used her recent reading book and I went through it and wrote a list of the high-frequency or tricky words and then onto the eggs.

High-Frequency Words Game ~ Speed Trial

My kids like a little competition and J occasionally likes supporting his little sister with her learning as well. So we decided to race to read the words the quickest.

To start with J said a word and then helped her find the word so she would start to recognize them.

Once she had them sorted out we then timed her to see how long she took. 27 seconds for the first attempt at these words. Then we timed her a second time 23 seconds – woho a new personal best for her.

It was then time to set a standard. J had a go and did it in 10 seconds – that’s what she is aiming for. Each time she goes through them she is cutting off more and more from her time and soon she’ll match him.
