If you are a long term follower of our site you may have noticed that we have a certain fondness for one sort of creature – DINOSAURS! To say that I am fascinated by them is an understatement and I think if Marine Biology hadn’t worked out I would have quite liked to study palaeontology. Anyhow, this week’s Virtual Book Club for Kids is themed on Dinosaurs and the featured book Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs by Mo Willems. We have a fantastic dinosaur learning game for you to play with your little ones to work on Upper and Lower Case Matching.
As always with our Virtual Book Club for Kids posts if you scroll to the end you will find our lesson plan from the hosts and co-hosts of the Virtual Book Club for Kids as well as other suggestions of books that you could use for this theme.
Join us this summer and get 4 weeks of fun activities to create and learn straight to your inbox.
Materials Needed for Dinosaur Upper and Lower Case Letter Hatch Game
Prep Needed for Dinosaur Letter Match Game
Print out the dinosaurs and Eggs onto card stock then cut out the dinosaurs and the eggs. I leave a little white edge around the dinosaurs otherwise, they are quite fiddly especially the T-Rex arms.
Playing the Dinosaur Learning Game
Lay out the dinosaurs that have hatched from the eggs on a flat surface and the eggs.
You can then choose whether you would like your child to identify the lower case letters on the dinosaurs or the Upper Case letters on the Eggs first. We choose the lower case as this is what we have been focusing on as capital letters come afterwards in the curriculum in the UK.
Now ask them to say the letter name, or the letter sound I like mixing it up with what sound does that letter make – this will help with beginning reading. Or ask them to name the letter instead depending on what you have worked with before.
They can now match up the baby dinosaur with the egg that it has come from.
Extention Idea for Dino Babies Letter Game
I don’t suggest laminating the eggs because as I discovered sometimes you want to extend the activity so we grabbed a pair of scissors and I cracked the eggs.
Cut the letters so that you have two halves of the eggs and now you can get your child to match up the egg halves, then to find the dinosaur that hatched from the egg.

Other Dinosaur Themed Books for this week’s Virtual Book Club for Kids
This week’s featured book is a favourite of ours. It was the first Mo Willems book that we read and inspired us to read more. Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs is a retelling of the classic Goldilocks and the Three Bears but with an interesting twist.
