Netflix Movies and Shows for Empowering Girls
I’m going to put it out from the start – I don’t like PINK! I’m not keen on princesses and fairies and don’t even get me started on glitter. But, without a doubt this what it seems that companies, brands, and clothing manufacturers seem to think girls need and want. You take a trip to the toy store and even the aisles with the “girls” toys on are coloured pink! And those toys, they are virtually the same toy in different packages. I know that I can get boys toys for my daughter and I do, but that doesn’t stop the fact that this is the marketing that girls are seeing. So whilst browsing Netflix recently I loved the variety of different shows that were aimed at girls and had to share them with you as these shows and movies are ideal for empowering our girls to be anything and do anything they want to be and do! So here’s our pick of the best movies and shows for girls on Netflix.
Empowering Girls
Imagine sitting in a classroom learning about careers options and when you are asked by the teacher what you want to do you say “Work with marine animals as a marine biologist in the field!” and that teacher laugh and then tell you that it was impossible as – “You are a girl and that’s not a job for a woman!”
I wish I could say that I was unique in having that experience but when I spoke with other women at science fairs, conferences, in classrooms it wasn’t an uncommon attitude and it’s not changed. In fact, in today’s society where women are marching in protest again, the attitude towards girls seems even worse than it was 20 – 30 years ago.
As parents, educators, and carers of girls, it’s our job to make sure that we aren’t continuing this attitude. We can help be the change makers, small things make a great difference and we have the role of empowering our girls.
The toys that we buy them, how we talk to them, the activities we do together, the shows that we watch and even what we get them to wear can help them to realise that they have the option of being whatever they want to be.

Starting out with my favourite, it’s based on a book (another favourite of mine) and I love the character it is of course Matilda. There isn’t a better movie for showing that no matter what you have you can be powerful, bullies, life’s hand of cards, not even school can stop this magical little girl from making a difference.
I remember growing up watching the TV as the first British astronaught visited the Mir Space Station back in 1991. That astronaught was a woman Helen Sharman, she was also the first woman on the Mir Space Station. How inspirational is that there is now a documentary on Netflix which follows a group of teenagers and they take STEM ideas and apply them to the possibility of getting to Mars. The Mars Generation is not only good for our girls to watch but also focuses on STEM ideas – science, technology, engineering and mathematics which is needed for both boys and girls. This is our future – not Mars necessarily but children that grow up to become the scientists, engineers, and influencers of the future.
Geeks and Nerds can be cool. It’s ok to be a girl that admits to liking science or maths right? Well, Project Mc² is making it ok for girls. These super smart girls are saving the day by applying the science, technology and maths skills with the help of super spy McKeyla.
