Nursery Rhymes and Songs

Nursery Rhymes and songs may be silly and lots of fun to dance and sing along to but did you know that they have some really important benefits for your little ones in their early development?

Those silly lyrics expose children to a rich language environment. The rhythmic patterns, rhymes, and repetition in them help children develop their phonemic awareness, vocabulary, and early literacy skills. They learn to recognize and manipulate sounds, which lays a strong foundation for reading and writing later on.

Children learn to articulate words and phrases, practice pronunciation, and improve their speech clarity. Singing together also enhances listening skills as children learn to follow the rhythm, melody, and lyrics.

Nursery rhymes and songs often have repetitive patterns, which helps children strengthen their memory skills. So you know Baby Shark… all that repetition and getting on your nerves it’s actually good for your little ones and will be helping them to improve their memory. The fact that many nursery rhymes introduce children to basic concepts like counting, colours, shapes, and animals, all go towards helping your little ones’ academic success without a worksheet or flashcard in sight!

Bathtime

Bath time is a regular routine in most houses, and it’s the ideal opportunity to include some rhymes and songs with your little ones, sing with toys, use the sponge and splash around in the water.

Even your newborn baby will start to get a benefit from these simple songs it’s one of our easy activities to do with your newborn and such a great way to connect and maybe the bath will be the place that you get that first smile.

Five Green and Speckled Frogs

If your little one like five little ducks then maybe they will like Five Green and Speckled Frogs – it was our favourite when my two were tiny. I had a set of bath frogs and they would sit on the side and jump into the water whenever we sang this song.

Five green and speckled Frogs
Sat on a speckled log
Eating some most delicious bugs.
Yum! Yum!
One jumped into the pool
Where it was nice and cool
Then there were 4 green speckled frogs

Down in the Jungle

Down in the jungle was one of my kids favourite jungle picture books and we had a version with this on CD! It was sung all the time but especially at bath time. This is one where you can make up your own verses too – just use whatever animals you can think of that may live in the jungle too!

Down in the jungle
Where nobody goes
There's a great big gorilla
Washing his clothes
With a rub-a-dub here
A rub-a-dub there
That's the way he washes his clothes
Boom, boogie, boom, a boogie boogie woogie x3
That's the way he washes his clothes

Down in the jungle
Where nobody goes T
here's a slithery snake
Washing his clothes
With a rub-a-dub here
A rub-a-dub there
That's the way he washes his clothes
Boom, boogie, boom, a boogie boogie woogie x3
That's the way he washes his clothes

Down in the jungle Where nobody goes
There's a great big crocodile
Washing his clothes
With a rub-a-dub here
A rub-a-dub there
That's the way he washes his clothes
Boom, boogie, boom, a boogie boogie woogie x3
That's the way he washes his clothes

Down in the jungle
Where nobody goes
There's a great big elephant
Washing his clothes
With a rub-a-dub here

That's the way he washes his clothes
Boom, boogie, boom, a boogie boogie woogie x3
That's the way he washes his clothes

One, Two, Three, Four, Five

Another classic number rhyme, 1 2 3 4 5 Once I caught a Fish Alive is perfect for some bath time singing. Why not see if you can catch some little toes or fingers as you sing along to this one.

One, Two, Three, Four, Five
Once I caught a fish alive

Six, Seven, Eight, Nine, Ten
Then I let him go again

Why did you let him go?
Because he bit me finger so!

Which finger did he bite?
This little finger on my right!

Row Row Row Your Boat

A firm family favourite in the Rainy Day house Row Row Row Your Boat is great fun to sing along to. As the crocodile scream can you get the water to shoot out of your hand into the air? How about a big splash at the end?

Row, row, row, your boat gentle down the stream,
merrily merrily, merrily, merrily,
life is but a dream.

Row, row, row, your boat gentle down the stream,
if you see a crocodile don’t forget to scream!

Row, row, row, your boat gentle down the river,
if you see a polar bear don’t forget to shiver!

Row, row, row, your boat gentle down the creak,
if you see a little mouse don’t forget to squeak!

Row row row your boat gentle to the shore,
if you see a lion don’t forget to roar!

Rock, rock, rock, your boat gentle to and fro,
merrily merrily merrily merrily into the water you go!

Incy Wincy Spider

A classic nursery rhyme for babies and toddlers, Incy Wincy Spider or Itsy Bitsy Spider if you are in the USA is fun. Grab the sponge and when the water goes down the spout let the water out!

ncy Wincy Spider, climbed up the water spout.
Down came the rain and washed the spider out.
Out came the sunshine and dried up all the rain.
And Incy Wincy Spider climbed up the spout again.
