Llama Llama Patterned Pajamas – pre-writing activity
Learning to write is one of the hardest things, it’s a learnt mechanism, when you can write you no longer have to tell your hand how to form each letter or which stroke the pen will make next but working up to that point takes time and to get to the point where you can do cursive writing although only a few years in the general timescale takes a lot of effort and practice. Today for our Virtual Book Club for kids we’re introducing Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney and I have a pre-writing activity with a FREE printable pre-writing dice for you to use as well as a printable pajama outline to make patterned.

Printable pre-writing dice and Pajama Outline
Pencil – these are the ones that we used with the children until they got the grip correct an alternative is a normal pencil with a pencil grip added
Preparation
Print out the dice onto some white card and cut out. Fold along all lines in towards the blank part and put a strip of sticky tape along the flaps (this is much easier than glue and less fiddly) then fold it together to form a dice.
Print out the pajamas onto red card.

Roll the dice and watch the pattern that it lands on – then decide whether it will be a pajama top or a pajama bottom.
Then copy the pattern to design the pajamas.
The dice contains various different patterns that help to form letters.
Extension Ideas
The pre-writing activity can easily be adapted for older children and those that have mastered the pre-writing shapes. Instead of our dice find a large dice and some stickers and replace the dots with letters that you child is working on. Further extension, could be to replace the letters with words, e.g. names of 2d shapes, colours, objects so that they can read and fill in the pajamas with patterns.

Thank you for this nice content!
Hi, thanks for all your iideas. I’m a Montessori directress of 5 children per day in my little “unscool” ages 2-7 years. I was wondering how I could obtain your Llama patterned Pajama dice and clothing cards…I can’t seem to find where to print them from.
Thanks again.
I also can’t seem to find the link. Lovely activity. Would love to have this gem.
