100 Fun and Easy Learning Games for Kids – Supporting Learning at Home

Over the last 5 years, I have worked closely with the fabulous Kim and Amanda from The Educators’ Spin On It, on bringing books alive with hands-on activities through the Virtual Book Club for Kids and then through the Early Years blogging team. This year though they are achieving their dream and together they have written a book encompassing everything that those two blogging endeavors stood for making learning fun through games and activities in the book 100 Fun and Easy Learning Games for Kids which was launched in May 2016.

My kids both love trying out the ideas that I come up with but there are plenty that fail and those don’t appear on the site until we have perfected them – however, what you don’t see is my bookshelf with ideas books for when I need a quick and easy idea that I can do with the kids I am really pleased that 100 Fun and Easy Learning Games for Kids has joined the other books to provide inspiration, With 100 ideas split into 6 different sections covering, reading, writing, maths, science, music and art and the world and aimed at parents and carers of young kids. ALL of the ideas were perfect for T (age 5) to practice or to extend what she already knows and a lot we could adapt to J (2nd grade) or he just wanted to do because they were so much fun.

Each activity is presented with an introduction, a focus skill and what it is great for. After that there are all the materials that are needed as well as directions to make and then play with the games. The “Rock Clock Mystery” which I will be sharing there are some variations to the game suggested underneath. Telling time is one of the skills that both J and T are working on at the moment one with telling the o’clock and adding and subtracting hours from that and the other working on minutes and problem-solving written statements on the time.

Telling analog time is hard, there is understanding of the hours (and that it keeps going around and around) then half hour, quarter to, quarter past, add in the minutes and how we speak about them twenty to eight or seven forty it’s a lot to grasp and get the hang of. This activity gets children building their own clocks with natural materials and using them to solves time story problems that you can create yourself to the ability of your child.
