Upper and Lower Case Hat Match

We’re right in the middle of an explosion of understanding with my youngest – she’s grasping so many different concepts and knowledge. One of the biggest is her understanding of letters and the sounds that they make and how they are written. With this weeks #playfulpreschool post I wanted to focus on developing her understanding of letters a little further and introduced Upper and Lower case letters. This weeks theme is hats and this is a quick to make activity to match those letters.

Materials Needed for Upper and Lower Case Hat Match

Magnetic Letters or Wooden Letters
Paper
Crayons
Coloured Paper
Pencil
Scissors
Marker

Preparation needed

Draw a quick person a piece of paper wearing a T-shirt that is big enough to hold a magnetic letter.

On the coloured paper draw and cut out some hats for the person to wear – you will need 26. I made one and then used that as a template to cut out the others.

On each hat write a lower case letter.

Setting up

We aren’t focusing on all letters at once as this is our first foray into Upper and Lower letter matching so I found some letters that I knew she already knew plus a few that were similar in Upper and Lower case and also some new ones and separated these out for our time.

I normally only spend 10 – 15 minutes at a time on an activity with T when it’s new knowledge unless it’s something that she particularly wants to continue with as she then starts to lose concentration and get bored of what we are doing.

Onto the person’s t-shirt I placed one of our magnetic letters – we are using the upper case set with lower case on the hats – however if your magnetic letters are lower case then in the prep use upper case on the hats.

Then I set out the possible hats from our selection and she picked the one that she thought it was.

We repeated and then matched the hats and the magnetic letters together.

  1. We’ve just recently started working with just a few letters at a time and this would be great to concentrate on just those.

  2. We are working on this skill. I like how it isolates just a few letters to work on at a time! So cute!
