I love paper crafts, whether it’s folding, painting or even gluing and sticking they are always a hit with myself and the kids. For the last of our Ocean Week on Storybook Summer we are inviting Cassie back from 3 Dinosaurs – a regularly for our Storybook Summer and Advent series and today she’s sharing with us a fun art activity inspired by the book Mister Seahorse by Eric Carle. This torn paper craft to create a sea horse reminds me of the style of art that Eric Carle uses in his book although his style uses tissue paper it follows some of the same principles. So whether you are focusing on Ocean Themed Activities or looking at the style of Eric Carle this art and craft activity for kids is ideal.

Hi, I’m Cassie from 3 Dinosaurs. I’m a mom of 3 stomping, romping and roaring girls! I blog about some fun printables, crafts, and gross motor. I’m so happy to be doing the summer storybook at Rainy Day Mum again.

One of our favorite ocean books has always been Mister Seahorse by Eric Carle. We have read it so many times. It was also a great book for dads as well.

We have a few favorite crafts like we like to do. We have loved using stencils and torn paper to make crafts. My girls pointed out that Mister Seahorse is many colors and would be fun to do as a torn paper craft. We set about making the challenge of doing a torn paper craft for one of our favorite books.

How to make your Torn Paper Art Seahorse Project

I traced on the white paper with the pencil the outline of the seahorse. It was to give my girls an area to cover with the torn paper.

The next step I gave them many different colors of construction paper they could choose from. They tore up the paper and complete covered their seahorse on the paper. We made sure the paper overlapped the tracing of the seahorse.

This is a great fine motor activity that often does not feel like a fine motor activity to them.

After they are sure they have all the colors they want we took the seahorse stencil and covered our torn paper. We the used watercolors to paint the lines. This gives it a different feel and it loads of fun to do.

Then you cut out around the seahorse outline. This gives you a wonderful looking multiple color seahorse.

We then put our ocean scene together. They added seaweed for the seahorse to swim around in. We tore strips of green paper for it.

The final step was adding small seahorses swimming around! We use a small seahorse stamp for it.
