I still remember booking our first family holiday when J was just a baby, by the time it came around he was a toddler of 13 months old and as it turned out I was also halfway there with my pregnancy with T! It was our first experience of a summer holiday with a toddler and we loved it. After that, we headed off with T and J in the UK and abroad as toddlers and our friends joined us long haul to Florida with a toddler too!

Talk to your toddler about traveling
Why should your toddler be surprised about every new thing happening to them on this trip?
If your toddler tends to be anxious and not like surprises, you may want to consider talking to them about traveling.
Just give them a head’s up about where you’ll be going and what the next steps in travel are.
Always keep a snack on hand
Let’s be honest, toddlers tend to get a little hangry all the time.
One of the best things you can do is keep a snack on hand.
A snack can help stabilize their blood sugar and keep them in a decent mood. Keeping water or juice on hand is also a good idea. Something you can grab quickly to help your toddler stay out of panic mode is always welcomed.

If you are traveling by plane then check the liquid regulations we used to carry an empty juice cup with us through security and then fill it up in the Departures lounge avoiding any issues.
Get your toddler excited about “what’s next”
Out of all children, toddlers have the best imaginations.
When you’re helping your toddler travel for the first time, get them excited!
Tell them what’s next and what the excitement is all about. They might ask you a million questions, but go along with it. If you’re flying, make it sound exciting. If you’re driving in a car, tell them you’re going on an adventure.
Why not print out a map and sit with them and play travel with a toy car or plane showing where you will be going.
Get your bag of tricks ready
Toddlers can be hard to travel with because they need to be entertained so often.
One thing you can do is get your bag of tricks ready. What does that even mean?
Have a bunch of activities ready to go. This could be songs, games, toys, stickers, or whatever else you can think of.
When your toddler is tired of singing, move onto the next activity. Being interactive with your toddler is truly going to help this trip go a lot better.
As you travel more with your toddler this part will get easier.
Traveling with your toddler for the first time isn’t always easy. However, these tips can help make it fun. Your toddler might get upset during travels, take some time to comfort them and let them know it’s going to be okay.
You’re going to have to reach inside yourself and pull out the most humble and patience version of yourself while traveling for the summer holidays with your toddler for the first time, but it will be worth it.
