Three Little Pigs Stick Shape House for Toddlers and Preschoolers
Back when my kids were very little I created a set of craft stick velcro shape sticks to use with them. We used them for making shapes but after reading Three Little Pigs I thought what a great way to use the story, our shape sticks and work on shape and colour at the same time. It’s been a long time since we did that and I never wrote about it at the time but as this week’s theme for The Virtual Book Club for Kids is Classic Tales it’s an ideal time to bring out the supplies and walk you through how to do this activity with your toddlers and preschoolers. So here it is – Three Little Pigs Stick Shape Houses.
Inspired by…
This idea is based on a post from 2008 over on Chasing Cheerios – I bookmarked it at the time and have referred back to it time and time again although I’ve seen others since I think that this Making Shapes with Tongue Depressors is the first one I saw.

Preparation for your 3 Little Pigs Shape Activity
It won’t take long to make your sticks for your children to use with this activity and you can get them to help along as well.
- Colour the sticks in different colours – I made 9 sticks in total and coloured 3 red on one side, 3 blue on one side, 3 yellow on one side, then flipped them over to do 3 orange, 3 purple and 3 green.
- Place a hook part of the velcro dots on one end of each coloured stick.
- Flip these over and place a hook on the other end.
- Then place the eye on the ends without the hooks.
Your sticks should have a hook on one side of the end and the eye on the other.
