Moving into this house – we were greeted with a horrid dinning room – it had orange carpet, stripes at the bottom of the wall a flowered border and then dots on the top half, full length curtains but with a really lovely lamp that was our style. As my husband to be headed off for his bachelor weekend away I got busy decorating the room. We replaced the curtains and I tiled the floor, stripped the wall paper off the walls and painted them. As the only entrance to the back garden the flooring was essential with all the outdoor time we spend. Along came our dog, followed by one and then two kids – the curtains were trod upon, swept outside and rained on, covered in mud and eventually as the kids got older pulled down whilst playing. Looking at solutions I was 90% sure that blinds wouldn’t work for a heavy traffic family room that also doubled as our dinning room and my office – how wrong I was.
Hillarys a UK based company were sure that there was a perfect solution that could cope with a family life style and suit exactly what we needed. The room has 2 windows – one that is a small window and the other a full size sliding doors that is the only exit to the garden from in the house, the kids and their friends, dog and us all use it daily to go and get out doors and throughout the warmer months the door is never clothes. With two young kids blinds also didn’t seem practical, I was under the impression that I couldn’t wash them, they had cords that would be a safety hazard with the kids and I thought were really impractical.
Our local Hillarys man came around and sat down and talked to me about the room, I explained about the use, showed him the evidence with the pulled down curtains and then showed him about my problems with the office and described how our family uses the room throughout the year. Within a few minutes he had solutions that amazed me. Wipe Clean PVC vertical blinds that could open and close and without any loops at the bottom which I knew from my classrooms were ideal for little hands to play with and break easily, plus a roller blind that would diffuse the light when I was at work and be useful for keeping the heat in during the winter when the room gets incredibly cold and the majority of heat is lost through the full windows.
Within an hour – we had the solution the windows measured and fitting arranged. A couple of weeks later the Hillarys man returned and within 30 minutes had fitted our new blinds. We’ve had them up for just over 3 weeks now – and I am amazed by then – gone is my fear of blinds in family homes, they are safe and easy to keep clean. The room is warmer and I can finally work in the room without having to close the curtains and switch on the light on a summer day.
We went for linen look PVC vertical blinds, they don’t have the loops at the bottom which I know would tempt my kids to stand and swing on them like an adventure playground. The controls all of which are cords are secured with safety features that make it impossible for the kids to play with them. On the large patio doors there is a full width roller blind in a sheer white which diffuses the sun light whilst still allowing the room to be lit by natural light, but means that the reflection on the screen as I work is minimised – it also doubles up to retain the heat in the room saving us on energy bills and making the room which can be cold at times feel more homely.
Hillarys have provided us with a solution that is exactly what we need to create a stylish family space that works for our family with 2 kids and a dog that love our outdoor life making a room that is in constant use more pleasant and easier to keep looking great.
We received the blinds for the purpose of this post from Hillarys, but the pictures and words used in the post are all our own opinion – find out more on our disclosure page.
