Don’t be put off heading to the non-fiction books for your toddlers and preschoolers. They love to learn and there are plenty that are written especially for this age. Check out these recommendations for non-fiction space books for toddlers and preschoolers that our kids enjoyed.

I always seem to start off my book lists with some of my favourite book-based series and this one will be no exception. The National Geographic Kids First Big Book of Space is an ideal introduction to space and the universe for little ones.

We only recently discovered the Cat in the Hat library and my youngest who loves rhymes and is a fan of the Dr Seuss books loves this series that combines rhymes and facts together There’s No Place Like Space: All About Our Solar System has been a favourite to read whilst she is interested in space and the solar system.

 With fantastic large pictures Smart Kids Space: For Kids Who Really Love Space! takes your preschooler on a tour of the universe, including a foray into some UFO knowledge!

Sometimes you want a book in your collection that will last and although this is a colouring book it is one with a difference as it includes facts and information about the universe and outer space as well. My First Book About Outer Space is aimed at older children but reading aloud and colouring together you can read and enjoy it with preschoolers onwards.

Why does the moon change shape? Just one of the questions that is answered in Whats Out There?: A Book about Space an ideal early years non-fiction book about space and some of the interesting things that happen and appear.

Although this is a fairly short book Astronomy For Kids: Planets, Stars and Constellations (only 40 pages on Kindle) it is packed with bright pictures with interesting facts about space. Pair it with some of the more in-depth non-fiction books and you and your child will quickly learn more and more about space.

If you have a little engineer in the making as well as your mini astronaut then Think like an Astronaut! How Do Rockets Work? is the book for them. With a way of explaining rocket science so that preschoolers can understand it you know, it’s going to be a hit with them.

Use Planets and Solar System for Kids with your kids on a camping trip or even laying out on an evening in the backyard and see how many constellations you can spot together. This book goes through them and is full of interesting facts that kids will love to learn.

Looking for a book that is entertaining and useful this Kindle book Can You Find Me in Space? A Kids Find-the-Object Book will keep the kids finding the different objects ideal for some space based interactive fun especially if you are waiting in queues or for things to happen.

This book is a bridge between non-fiction and fiction as the concept of space travel over the distances covered is not possible at the moment so fiction but the information presented is non-fiction. Interstellar Space Journey: Space Book for Kids takes the concept of space journeys and helps to explain it and what it would entail in terms that young children can understand.

Space Themed Fiction books For Toddlers and Preschoolers

Join the animal crew of Roaring Rockets Amazing Machines as they race and roar through space in this colourful and fun book for your preschoolers and toddlers to enjoy having read to them. Watch how quickly they pick up the story and start reading it aloud with you as well.

With flaps and sliders Bizzy Bear: Space Rocket is an ideal book for toddlers and preschoolers to read and whizz around the solar system with Bizzy Bear in his rocket. Do watch out for the aliens though they will pop up when you least expect them to.

Books that feature favourite characters are always a hit and one of my children’s favourites thanks to Disney is Curious George. In Curious George Discovers the Stars is great especially if you can catch the matching episode on TV. With different facts for different ages, you can introduce the book early and then increase the reading as your child grows and their language skills develop.

If you like us love everything Mickey Mouse then this classic picture book Mickey Mouse and His Spaceship is one that you should get. First published in the 1950’s and featuring Mickey and Donald zoom off into space with the pair and have a fun adventure.

One of my all-time favourite children’s authors and a fantastic book Draw Me a Star by Eric Carle this space themed story has so much more to it than just space. It’s a fantastic book to add to your collection with a lovely message in it as well.

What happens when the Berenstain Bears head into space – well in The Berenstain Bears on the Moon they have fun with no gravity, see what happens with there are meteors and love playing around with moon rocks. If your children like Berenstain Bears then this is a great space-themed book with enough facts to make the fun story a little more realistic as you read it.

Books on Space for Babies and Toddlers

Even the youngest toddler and baby can be captured by space, the pretty colours of the planets, the contrast of the bright white stars on the blackness and they love to listen to your talk and read

Are We There Yet? All About the Planet Jupiter! is a fact based book for young toddlers and babies – take a journey to the largest planet in the solar system and read together about the strange and wonderful planet.

“Why” was always a favourite word of my toddler – “Why do birds fly”, “why can’t I fly”, “why is a rocket in space and a bird not” yes we were inundated with why questions and Baby Loves Aerospace is a short board book than can help you answer some of these questions in age appropriate language.

Space Books for your early readers

If you have a child that is learning to read combined with an interest in space then National Geographic Readers: Planets is one to get hold of, whether you buy or borrow from your library this book is written in simple text but provides great facts about the planets in our solar system.

In this Level 1 Ready to read book Ralph and the Rocket Ship you and your early reader can follow along as Katy and her pal Ralph head off into space.

 A great series that bridges the gap between simple learning to read books and chapter books are the Magic School Bus series. The Magic School Bus Lost In The Solar System is a firm favourite in our house so much so that it was part of our Storybook Summer Series a with an Out of this World Art Project to do with it as well.
