Apple Printing – Autumn Art for Toddlers & Preschoolers

This week’s virtual book club for kids theme is apples and we have our favourite apple activity for toddlers and preschoolers to share with you – making apple prints. It’s really simple to do but we have some top tips to make it even easier especially with those little hands. So here we go Apple Printing – fun autumn art for toddlers and preschoolers.

We try and match our toddler and preschool activities here on Rainy Day Mum with a book. Our book this week is Ten Apples Up on Top! by Dr Seuss and silly rhyming book about 3 friends that try and balance 10 apples on top of their heads.

Whilst they balance the apples they do lots of fun things like drink milk and jump rope.

It was such a fun book to read that our preschooler wanted to make 10 apples with his prints before he started to experiment with the apples.

Making Apple Prints with Preschoolers and Toddlers

Although as I said about J really wanted to make 10 recognisable apples inspired by our book this week. He then experimented!

To aid in his experimentation I provided a lot of different types of cuts of apples for him. E.g.

  • Slice
  • Triangle shapes
  • Circles
  • and one showing the apple star in the centre

This was achieved by cutting the apple in different angles. As we used cooking apples from our apple tree he had a nice solid shape to hold.

Potato Printing Tessellation - combine art and maths to create tessellation patterns and talk about shape facts and pattern making
Handle cut into Potato to make it easier to hold for preschoolers and toddlers when making prints – we do the same with apples

But if you are using smaller apples then like we did with our potato prints I suggest you cut a handle into the apple making it easier to print with.

For younger toddlers, you could provide just 1 colour of paint or to make it more “apple-like” why not provide red and green so you get a mix of apples.

Apple Books to Add to Our Book Basket tHis Week

We love reading alongside our apple activities and as well as Ten Apples Up On Top! By Dr Seuss we have added these 3 apple books to our book basket this week.

The classic tale of Johnny Appleseed retold in this version of rhyme and pictures by Reeve Lindbergh.

Apples by Gail Gibbons – a non-fiction book that looks at apples, where they grow, their life cycle and more.

To start to introduce more of the autumn season we have added Apples and Pumpkins by Anne Rockwell. This will likely be a fixture in the book box through to the end of October for us.

  1. Apple printing looks good to me, and a great idea for your linky party. If it were Halloween I would link up apple bobbing and toffee apples! Thank you for joining Country Kids.
