My personality type is one that I just can’t switch off. I often wake up at 3 in the morning with ideas, and it can take ages and ages to relax enough to fall asleep most nights. Because of this, what ends up happening is that every couple of months I get run down. The headaches start and that’s it; I’m lost for a couple of days needing to lie down as the room spins and my eyes hurt with the light.

But like many I don’t like taking tablets too often and one of the ways that I have discovered to mimise the number I take is by taking a trip to a calming place, a relaxing place and somewhere that frees the mind of everything else my #Betterplaces, the North Norfolk Coast.

Growing up in East Anglia I’ve never lived too far from the sea, and where-ever I’ve lived I’ve tried to keep the sea as close as possible to my house (including living in a tent on a beach for over a month in Greece!), but in the UK there is one place that refreshes and frees the mind: the North Norfolk Coast. The sound of the sea whether it’s mill pond smooth or roaring, raging storm seas, the water relaxes and refreshes the mind.

From Hunstanton to Cromer the beaches that stretch the length are freeing, they are wide open spaces backed with sand dunes, pine forests, cliff and marsh-land, and although a popular tourist destination, even in the height of summer, with just a short walk, you can find peace and quite.

You’d think as a mum of two young children that my better place would be away from them, but with such wide spaces they are part of the space, they can run, splash in tidal pools in the summer and watch the wildlife and explore the shore all within view.

The beaches aren’t just for summer though. Hunstanton with easy parking or one of the many nature reserves along the coast are accessible year-round, and a winter walk along the shore, wrapped up warm, is a beautifu,l refreshing walk that will clear those cobwebs and remove the headache as well as tire the kids out which means more sleep for me.

Whether I am wrapped up with wellington boots, hat, scarf and mittens, not wanting to remove my gloves to take a picture of the seals as they play in the sea, or bare feet and walking in the gentle, lapping waves, the North Norfolk Coast is my better place to relax, refresh and relieve headaches and the stresses of life.

  1. The North Norfolk coast is beautiful all year round, the long empty sandy beaches, the big skies, the calls of the wildlife and the sea in its many moods. A magical place to restore peace to body and soul.
