Simple New Year’s Eve Mocktail to Make with Kids

I’m all about easy this time of year and if your kids want to celebrate New Year’s Eve in style with you why not let them make their own mocktails. Just pop a rock-candy swizzle stick into a plastic champagne flute, pour over chilled sparkling grape juice (rosé/white), and let the crystals slowly dissolve for a magical, bubbly stir. That’s it – no mess, no fuss.

Ingredients for Making NYE Mocktails

  • 1 x 750 ml bottle sparkling grape juice, chilled (rosé looks gorgeous) (about 3¼ cups)
  • 5 pink rock-candy sticks (aka candy crystal swizzle sticks)

Equipment: 5 plastic champagne flutes, small jug (optional).

How to Make Your Easy Mocktails for New Year’s Eve

  1. Stand a rock-candy stick upright in each flute.
  2. Pour in sparkling grape juice to the top.
  3. Give a gentle stir and serve immediately.

Safety: Use plastic flutes for kids. Once the candy loosens, remove the stick for younger children to avoid biting.

Variations & swaps

  • UK alternatives: sparkling apple juice or elderflower presse; colour with a dash of pink syrup if needed.
  • Lower-sugar option: choose no-added-sugar sparkling juices or top up with chilled soda water.
  • No rock-candy? Use a paper straw with a sparkling sugar rim (dip rims in water, then sanding sugar).
  • DIY rock-candy: why not make your own rock-candy it will need a little prep ahead but it’s a really fun activity to do with the kids.

Get Prepared – Make-ahead & serving

  • Chill bottles at least 4 hours (or 30 minutes in the freezer—set a timer).
  • Pre-place candy sticks in flutes on a tray; bring out and pour at the countdown.
  • For littles, pour smaller servings and remove the stick once the drink turns pink.

Make more for a Party

  • A 750 ml bottle fills 5 flutes (about 150 ml / 5 fl oz each).
  • 1.5 L sparkling juice ? 10 flutes.
  • 3 L (two 1.5 L bottles) ? 20 flutes.

Tip: Keep bottles chilled and add the candy sticks just before pouring so the fizz stays lively.
