One of my all-time favorite winter picture books is The Snowman by Raymond Briggs. This book is unique, because it has no words making it perfect for preschoolers. They can make up the story as they go by “reading” the pictures on each page. And, there are a lot of them.

There are 175 picture frames in this story which follows a young boy on a magical winter adventure with his snowman who has come to life. The nice thing about this story is that there is no right or wrong way to tell it since there are no words.

Making the Melted Snowman Sensory Bag

Making the melted snowman sensory bag is super easy. All you need is a

zip-top baggie

shaving cream

black buttons

orange craft foam cut into a triangle for the nose.

Fill the baggie with shaving cream. Drop the buttons in (I used 6), as well as the orange nose. Try to squeeze all of the air out of the baggie without squeezing out the shaving cream. Now, zip the baggie closed.

I can tell you from experience that less is more. The more shaving cream there is in the bag, the harder it is to find the buttons and the foam nose. They get buried in the shaving cream, and this may frustrate little ones.

For extra security, you may want to use duct tape to cover the zipper top of the bag so little ones can’t unzip or pry it open. Once it’s secure, your little ones are ready to play.

It’s Time to Play

Let your little ones squish their melted snowman around. See if they can move the buttons and nose around to form a snowman face.

Variations

If your children still put things in their mouth, you might want to use wide tape to tape the bag to the play surface (a craft mat, high chair tray, or table top). This keeps the bag in place while allowing little ones to explore.

If you’d like, you could also use another piece of craft foam to create a top hat to place in the bag before you seal it up.

This is a great activity to add to your winter story time or your snowman unit.
