We love Mel Science and in the past here on Rainy Day Mum have reviewed the Mel Science Chemistry subscriptions sets but I was really excited to see the STEM kits for younger children now on the site. We have been sent 2 of the kits to review and share our experiences with you today. So here we go our review of the Mel Science STEM Kits for 5 to 10 year olds.
Mel Science
For those that don’t know Mel Science is subscription box service for kids that love to experiment. They started out and first came to my attention during the pandemic and when we were home educating our children afterwards.
The chemistry sets were the ones that we purchased as a family and now I had children studying for their GCSE’s they are ideal for experimenting and explaining some of the more challenging concepts in science. In fact, as I’ve returned to the classroom teaching STEM this year I’ve also used the kits in my science lessons.
The subscription service provides everything you need to conduct the experiments, build the physics practical and in the case of the STEM kits explore and build some fabulous STEM projects.
Special offer from Rainy Day Mum and Mel Science
50% off their standard science set or $19.90 off for any of their sets

STEM Kits from Mel Science
Where Mel Science Chemistry and Physics kits have been fabulous with my teens and will easily continue to be so if either decide to do A’Level Chemistry I had always wished there was something for younger kids. So it was great to find that there are now STEM Kits aimed at 5-10 year olds.
These kits come with almost everything (we needed to add water) you need to complete some fabulous projects. We received the Catapult and Hydraulic lift and spent a Sunday afternoon playing with them once built.
In each box there is a comic book with a story where you need to build an object to solve the problem. As a STEM teacher this is a fabulous way to introduce and get children to problem solve.
It them provides the solution with easy to follow instructions and within less than an hour you have a working device that solves the problem in the comic.
But the fun doesn’t stop there!
Take the catapult – I’ve taken it into my STEM class and we’ve used it with teenagers to look at projectiles, trajectory and air-resistance as well as angles. My class is loving it and it’s got them thinking of predictions and then explaining why results are different and how to improve the objects further!
The hydraulic lift has joined pride of place in my classroom alongside my homemade newton’s cradle and Steve our human body demonstration model.
Alongside the comic and object to build. There’s also a sticker which goes with the mystery planet map to show the progress that your kids have made on their STEM journey. There’s also an AR card to give you a science lesson behind the STEM model you make.
STEM Subscription Sets
One of the reasons that we started buying the Mel Science Subscription sets is I wanted to do real science with my kids at home regularly. These STEM sets fulfil the same purpose but with younger kids.
Arriving each month through your letter box you know you’ve got a perfect STEM themed rainy afternoon activity to do with your kids that’s fun (the catapult is my students and own kids favourite thing ever!) and educational.
There’s different subscription offers from gift subscriptions to several boxes to have delivered making them an ideal educational Christmas or Birthday gift from a relative.
Here at Rainy Day Mum we also have a fantastic offer – if you use the code RAINYDAY50 at the checkout you’ll receive 50% off their standard science set or $19.90 off for any of their sets.
