If you are a long-time reader of Rainy Day Mum you will know that we love connecting Books and Activities and have done for years with our Virtual Book Club for Kids. However, this has always focused on preschoolers and toddlers. But, there’s no reason to stop when you kids can read. So for this school year, we have decided to start a new series of Book Based Activities for Kids around The Magic Tree House books for kids from 6 – 9 years old.
The Magic Tree House Book Series
We have included affiliate links to some of the products and resources as an associate we may earn from qualifying purchases.
When my eldest was progressing with the reading I got really fed up with the Biff and Chip books that the school provided so I asked friends around the world for another series that is good for readers starting on their chapter book journey and the most popular series was The Magic Tree House Books by Mary Pope Osborne.
I quickly bought the first 4 books in a set and we sat down and read them. J loved the adventures and you could see his reading develop as we whizzed through the books.
But, even better it got me thinking as a teacher how I could use them as a starting point for great topic and unit work. Exploring the themes more, learning through activities and connecting across the curriculum.
It’s a few years later and my youngest is now reading them and as she is someone that loves to learn I’ve decided to put our ideas into action and so our Magic Tree House Book Based Activities Series on Rainy Day Mum has been born.
Magic Tree House Book Based Activities
Each fortnight (every 2 weeks) we will feature at least one brand new activity for school kids here on Rainy Day Mum on the theme of the books in their order. So starting off with a Dinosaur Activity for Dinosaurs Before Dark.
At the same time, a team of other bloggers will also be creating activities and resources around the books that you can do as well.
We will be sharing those in our newsletter too!

Below you will find a list of the books, with the featured activity plus links to the book-themed activities as we update this.
But first the books, we have found it’s cheaper to buy the books either second hand or to get the sets instead. Below you will find links on the images to Amazon to the first 12 books (that’s what we will cover in the next 24 weeks+) and a box set of the first 28 which will save you lots of buying them individually.
So here we go our Book Based Activities for The Magic Tree House Series by Mary Pope Osborne can be found below. Bookmark or Pin this image to return to and if you wish to have the activities straight to your inbox then sign up at the bottom of the email for our series.
Dinosaurs Before Dark
The first theme for the series will be Dinosaurs and here on Rainy Day Mum will be looking at pre-history putting it into context and exploring a little more about Dinosaurs with older kids. Check out our Dinosaurs Timeline Activity to find out why T-Rex and a Stegosaurus would never have fought!
If you would like to do more than 1 activity with your kids we have a full unit study inspired by this book which includes elements of Literacy, Maths, Science and Creative Activities.
Extend the unit further by reading one of our selection of Dinosaur and Fossil Fiction Books for School kids.
The Knight at Dawn
A fun era in history we will be looking at the Middle Ages and everything knights, kings and queens. You can expect a field trip from us in the UK and hopefully, we’ll take the video camera along so you can explore with us as well.
To extend the reading we’ve put together our list of fiction books for school kids on knights, castles and medieval times. Check it out and read a couple as you explore the Middle Ages with your kids and this second book in the series.
If you would like a full unit study on the 2nd book in the series featuring language arts, creative activities, maths and science check out our The Knight at Dawn Unit Study.
To do with the book The Knight at Dawn we created our own Runes. Runes were the main way of writing in Northern Europe from around 500AD through to 1100AD. Find out how to make your own and use them in our Guide to Making Your Own Runes with Kids.
Mummies in the Morning
For our third theme, we are heading to ancient Egypt and exploring pyramids and the Nile.
To read alongside the Mummies in the Morning (Book 3) we have compiled a list of Fiction books for School Kids about Ancient Egypt.
After reading Mummies in the morning why not make your own Cartouches to learn about Egyptian writing.
Pirates Past Noon
Head out on the high seas and join us for a Pirate theme to go along with book 4 in the series.
