Autumn is finally here and as we walk the dog we can see the leaves changing colour almost before our eyes. For this week’s theme of Leaves for the Virtual Book Club for Kids, we are working on some prewriting practice. This is an activity that is just perfect for this theme and you don’t have to worry what type of leaves you have because I’ve given a handy alternative especially for the more tropical and southern hemisphere readers. So onto our Leaf Art, with prewriting patterns to go with the featured book this week Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert.
Leaf Art Activity for Preschoolers
It was back when I started blogging in 2011 that the leaf art post from The Artful Parent caught my eye and I couldn’t wait to try something similar with my own kids when they were a little older.
Now that they are we set about creating some leaf art but with the purpose of helping to develop writing skills.
Materials Needed for the prewriting leaf art activity

Leaves - if you don't have lots of leaves around then silk leaves are a great alternative
Prewriting Dice Pattern to download, print and make
Making Leaf Activity with prewriting patterns
Download and print the Prewriting pattern dice (see above for the link).
Cut it out and glue it together - or use double sided sticky tape as this seems to work really well with no time waiting for glue to dry.
Start off by drawing with a metallic marker along the veins of the leaf this will section the leaf.
Roll the dice and the top pattern fill in one of the sections of the leaf with that pattern.
Once that section is full roll the dice again and fill in another section
An alternative is to fill each different leaf with the different patterns and then create a display check out some of the ideas for display on our Crafts with Real Leaves post.
