Go Wild this Summer as a Family

With the heat on this week in the UK and the summer shining my thoughts turn to summer and our summer break. I know many of you in the USA are already broken up or about to break up. As the summer starts it is one of my favourite seasons (I have 4 of them!) I think because I know that for much of it, we will have time together as a family and we can get outside easily to the beach or woods there are so many possibilities. That’s why this summer we are taking up the challenge and will be working our way to Gold on the Wild Challenge with the RSPB.

Experience and learn about nature with Wild Challenges from the RSPB as you and your family work together to complete the challenges set!

What is the Wild Challenge?

The wild challenge is a scheme for families that is set up by the RSPB to help you connect with nature through learning about it and hands-on activities that as a family you can do together. It’s not limited to those in the UK you are welcome to join in from wherever you are in the world.

How do you join the Wild Challenge?

Joining the Wild Challenge is easy you click through and sign up for an account with the RSPB and then in your dashboard you can connect to Wild Challenge. We’ve set up a group “Rainy Day Mum Family” where J, T, Rainy Day Dad and myself will be recording our activities and experiences over the summer and beyond, we would love you to join in along with us as well.

DIY Nest Box - wildlife gardening with kids

Nature has always been a big part of our life and MANY of the activities we have done previously with the children and although they are now almost 8 and 6 they have been doing some since they were toddlers. Whatever age range your children are there are activities that they can do and it’s up to you to work towards your awards as quickly or slowly as you want.

You don’t have to be a member of the RSPB to join, but if you are in the UK then the reserves around the country like Minsmere near us in Suffolk are fabulous places to visit and as a member there are certainly advantages like Free parking or discount on activities.

  1. I love this. We’ve done some of the things on the list as well but I think it’s a great idea to start afresh for this year. The kid is already 10 but still loves doing these things (although at times, we have to wait for him to finish some Minecraft game he’s doing before going out!)
