Garden Flower Ten Frame
The garden provides lots of opportunities for learning and crafting – from creating seed bombs to measuring weather as well as learning about how plants grow. This week for the virtual book club for kids we are using some common weeds and a few sticks to work on number bonds and counting to 10 using a DIY Ten Frame. A 1- frame is a great way to get children to see numbers and manipulate them to work out the relationships for number bonds as well as use those basics to understand place value in the future.

Materials needed for your Garden Flower Ten Frame
Sticks
Two different sorts of flowers – 10 of each sort we used Daisies and Dandelions picked from the garden.
Preparation for your Garden Flower Ten Frame
Lay out our sticks into a grid so you have 5 boxes at the top and 5 boxes at the bottom.
Using the Flower Ten Frame
We started off using the ten frame for simple counting and number bonds.
Place a number of dandelions and then filling the blank spaces with the daisies. Then adding them together to find out how many more would make 10.
Once we had revised our number bonds to ten using the ten frame we then played a couple of games.
The favourite one a battleship style game where I played against her guessing the position of her dandelions and daisies based on instructions like – Do you have a space on the bottom row, do you have equal numbers of daises and dandelions etc….
Save some daisies and create a daisy crown with our simple step-by-step guide.

Garden Week Book Ideas
The featured book for our Garden week with Virtual Book Club for Kids is The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle. Possibly one of my favourite garden books and a classic in our household as soon as spring arrives.
As with every week though realising how difficult it can be to find certain books and wanting to fill our book box we suggest 4 other books that are great for reading with kids in the early years.
