If you are a regular reader of Rainy Day Mum you will know that each Monday we feature a book based activity for Toddlers and Preschoolers featuring a popular or classic children’s storybook s part of the Virtual Book Club for Kids. These books are chosen based around seasonal event, areas of learning and fun topics for toddlers and preschoolers and you to do together. Moving forward into Spring here’s our latest themes and featured books for this time of year. If you would like to get more information about the activities then check at the end of the post for ways in which you can follow and join in with this weekly series here on Rainy Day Mum.
In March we have 4 themes which are spring and Easter related – the Easter themed weeks though could easily be adapted for us in Spring only.
March 5 – Rainbows
I love this theme as it’s gives an opportunity to talk about the weather, light and colours and is perfect for St Patrick’s Day as well. This year we have chosen the book Rainbow of My Own by Don Freeman.
There is one theme that works fantastically this time of year Bunnies and we have chosen a classic storybook for children as our featured book for the week. The theme, of course, is Bunnies and whether you are looking at spring, gardens or even Easter this bunny book is a fabulous one for every toddler and preschoolers book basket. The book is The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter.
March 19 – Eggs
With just under 2 weeks till Easter the theme of Eggs is perfect – if you don’t celebrate Easter then switch out our recommended book The Easter Egg by Jan Brett for Egg by Kevin Henkes which will work year around for this theme.
With spring officially started Birds is a fantastic theme for toddlers and preschoolers. Our book this week is a classic children’s picture book Are You My Mother? by P.D. Eastman.
Don’t forget to put out some extra food for the birds as they start to build their nests this time of the year.
April 9 – Zoo
One of our favourite field trips is to take the kids to Zoo. It’s a fantastic way to get them to see some of the animals they only ever see in books and on TV. Our featured book Good Night Gorilla by Peggy Rathmann is perfect to read together and make sure you plan a trip to your nearest Zoo this week.
April 16 – Community Helpers
A fantastic theme for toddlers and preschoolers that can be used at any point of the year is Community Helpers, those people that work in the communities where we live and support us. For this week’s book, we have chosen Trashy Town by Andrea Zimmerman and David Clemesha.
April 23 – Frogs
My favourite theme of all of theme in the coming months is Frogs and the book we have chosen The Wide-Mouth Frog by Keith Faulkner is such a fun book to share with your toddlers and preschoolers they will love this pop-up version of the story as well.
With the weather warming up Gardens is the perfect theme for the end of April – it’s also an ideal time to start to plant some seeds with your toddlers and preschoolers. Our chosen book The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle is a brightly coloured illustrated book that is also educational and perfect for our theme of gardens.
Stock up on some of these Quick Growing Seeds so that during our Garden Week you can start to plant and watch them grow without having to wait all summer long.
