Farm Animal Beginning Sounds Activity and Bingo Game

My kids love visiting the farm whatever the time of the year and after just moving to the country we are surrounded by farms. Today for the Virtual Book Club for Kids we are focusing on learning beginning sounds with this very simple Farm Animal Beginning Sounds Activity plus a downloadable Bingo game that you can laminate and play over and over again.

The reason that this activity is so simple is that you can adapt it to what you have. We used the farm animals from our toy box plus a few extra’s that H insisted lived on the farm as well! Not only were we able to work on the beginning sounds of the words but also on speech and the letter sounds as well.

Playing together the Farm Animal Beginning Sounds Activity

This was so simple I sat down on the floor with H and we identified the different animals she had decided lived on the farm. We had a dog, deer, fish, frog, sheep, chicken, pig and snake. `One of the first things to remember with the activity is that although we are working towards beginning able to spell and write the words here we are listening out for the sounds of the letters. So animals like chicken or sheep have a sh or a ch sound, not an s or c.

Sitting down with H we picked up an animal and she said the name – I then split it up into the phonemes (if you would like to find out more about phonemes and phonics then check out our guide for parents) for the words – the individual letter sounds that you hear in the word e.g. dog – d o g and then asked what sound she heard at the beginning of the word.

After she had identified it we practiced saying that letter making sure to get the right sound. Hearing and saying the letters correctly is the first stage of learning to read.

Once we had identified the beginning sound I wrote the letter sound on a piece of paper. Matching the written letter with the sound that she could hear.

Then we walked the animal over the letter in the direction that she will learn to write the letters in the future.

I then wrote the animal name.

H then spotted letters from in her name within the animal names and was very excited if one of them had one of the letters included.

Extension Activities

If you child is much younger then instead of working on beginning letter sounds work on the noises that the animals make – H’s younger sister joined us and instead of working on the letter sounds we gave her farm animals and made the sounds as well as singing Old MacDonald has a farm – and yes on our farm we did have a snake and a fish!

With older children get them to break down the words or segment them into the smaller parts that they can hear and then write them together. If you have any letters either magnetic or wooden then you could use these to help spell out the words as they sound.
