Family Friendly Luxury at Grand Hotel Kronenhof

Switzerland for me brings back memories of ski holidays as a child, pistes full of snow for hours and days of fun going up and down chair lifts, building snow castles and making snow angels. Returning this summer to the Engadine region of Switzerland with the kids for a long weekend break at The Grand Hotel Kronenhof in Pontresina just a few miles from the famous resort of Saint Moritz we saw a completely different side to Switzerland and one I look forward to exploring more over the coming years.

Family Friendly Luxury just doesn’t sound like it’s possible, how can you combine the two and still experience the luxury that you are used to before kids, whilst making sure that it is a real family break but the Kronenhof and Kulm Hotel have managed it.

The Grand Hotel Kronenhof is in the smaller village of Pontresina a few miles away from the larger Saint Moritz but with designer stores, glamorous facades of the hotels and homes in the village plus excellent road links during the summer and I have been told during the winter. As well as a rail station which makes getting to the village from Zurich easy even with young kids.

Accommodation at The Grand Hotel Kronenhof

There is a variety of accommodation options ideal for families – from a combination of two single rooms to a suite. All offer luxury with comfortable beds, bright light rooms with large windows and views ranging from into the magnificent courtyard to across the Engadine region.

We stayed in a Junior Suite – with a double bed, plus very comfortable single pop-up bed, a seating area that I could relax in whilst the children slept. With windows that could open fully to allow the wonderful mountain air into the rooms to partly open but secure to keep the room refreshed overnight as for ecological and historical reasons, the hotel doesn’t have air condition.

There was ample room for our clothes which although we stayed for a long weekend as the restaurants have a set dress code year around and we also visited over the 1st August weekend when Switzerland celebrates its national day ranged from clothes for walking, swimming, paddle boarding to formal dress for the evenings.

Little touches in the rooms for the kids made it extra special for them and showed the car that the kids club took over their little guests. Greeting us when we arrived were a tray of candies for each child, an activity pack, cuddly toy to keep them company at night and their own gown and slippers for use in the spa and around the suite.

The luxury suites like the Kronenhof suite excelled with room for the kids and parents to relax, enjoy the stay and retreat from the outside world whilst being comfortable.

Resturants

In The Grand Hotel Kronenhof, there are 3 restaurants plus a bar/lounge and also a unique kids restaurant. Each of the restaurants in addition to the delicious menu specific to their resturant offers the kids menu so although children can dine in their own resturant with members of the kids club you can enjoy tasty meals with the children as well.

The Grand resturant offers a buffet breakfast, with the children having their own mini buffet with extra special treats like iced donuts, rainbow cookies and of course their favourite cereals although mine both enjoyed sampling some of the adult breakfast buffet as well.

In the evening The Grand resturant with formal dress code for men and women serves a 4 course meal with a Vital option which is healthier.

Facilities

One of the most outstanding features of the Luxury Family Friendly hotel is the Spa – and children are welcomed with open arms in fact, they are positively encouraged in the pools as there is a separate children’s pool with mini slides, fountains, water sprays and toys. Which to make sure that whilst the children play you can swim or relax in peace also has glass that reduces the noise and even when both of my children were playing loudly inside the children’s pool I couldn’t hear a thing.

The spa is made up of a large 8 m x 20 m swimming pool, the children’s pool, a steam pool, relax-floating grotto with underwater music, saltwater grotto, sauna, Kneipp footbaths, solarium, fitness room and gym as well as a hair salon and 13 treatment and beauty rooms.

Kids Club

I love going away with my kids, but I’m also finding it nice to have some time away from them and the kids club at Kronenhof hotel provided us with an opportunity for both. With optional pre-bookable morning session, a famiy time where the club was closed then from 4pm through to 9pm including their own meal time in the Kid’s Restuarant there was a full programme of kids club organised by the multilingual trained staff.

From 3 years old they can attend the kids club where during the summer events like relay races, hand printing, story telling with a William Tell theme, cooking, pizza making and also the occasional bowling party in the hotel’s 9 pin bowling alley are arranged weekly.

Both kids loved all of the activities that they did within kids club often returning from the mornings activities and demanding to head straight there and being unwilling to leave at the end of the night to go to bed. As a former teacher the staff were amazing, they planned and executed the activities tailoring the weekly programme to the children’s interested where needed and combining a mix of both activities for the younger and older kids in the club.

As I said at the start it is hard to find a place where you can relax and enjoy the comfort of the surroundings with your family in luxury but The Grand Hotel Kronenhof cares for you as a family, engaing the kids and making them feel as welcome as I did. It gave us all an opportunity to rest, rejuvinate and enjoy the Engadine region together as a family as well as spend time alone.

  2. Wow, that looks seriously impressive. The backdrop couldn’t be any more beautiful. I think it’s fantastic that luxury hotels are opening up to the family market these days and are becoming so accommodating to family’s needs.
