If you walk into our house one of the things that people comment on is the smell – not that it’s a smelly house, but the fact that it’s fresh despite having a dog and the main reason for this is because of essential oils. In the past few years, we’ve switched from artificial air fresheners to natural products and have made a switch even further in making our own products and using essential oils in our lives.
The fact that they smell nice is an added bonus but since our kids were born we’ve not just used them for the scent although that is a huge advantage but we’ve also used them for the health benefits as well as for our everyday household chores including laundry and cleaners. When we started out we used 2 essential oils that played such a vital role in the early days of both of our children, with J they were used extensively in our washing regime – melaleuca better known as tea tree was added to every wash of our cloth diapers and lavender was used to aid relaxation and ease tension. By the time T was born and my second caesarean I was using both of those essential oils for other benefits – read all about my natural care plan for post caesarean birth here. As time has gone on I now use them for many other uses and hope to share some of our recipes, ideas and thoughts with you here on the blog.
What are essential oils?
Essential oils are natural compounds found in different parts of plants, extracted and distilled for health benefits. They work rapidly and are incredibly effective. Hundreds of different compounds provide complex & versatile ability to combat threats without building up resistance working with the body to address issues and root causes on a cell level. Essential oils are simple to use and have been used for thousands of years it’s only in recent times that we have moved away from these natural compounds to manufactured compounds.
What can they be used for?
So, so many things here’s a few that we use regularly at home and their benefits
- Lavender – used for its calming and relaxing qualities, soothing occasional skin irritations, helping skin recover quickly and easing muscle tension
- Melaleuca – cleansing and rejuvenating effect on the skin, I have used it since I was a teenager in my skin care, promoting healthy immune function, protecting against environmental and seasonal threats, promoting a clear, healthy complexion, soothing minor skin irritations and helps purify and freshen the air
- Wild Orange – a powerful cleanser and purifying agent, it helps protect against seasonal and environmental threats, and my favourite it’s uplifting to the mind and body
