Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is a Christmas classic! Rudolph is born with an unusually red nose that lights up. The other reindeer make fun of him and call him names. However, one stormy Christmas Eve, it’s Rudolph’s shiny nose that saves Christmas!

You can find picture book versions of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer that follow the traditional Christmas carol. There are also versions that follow the television classic featuring Hermy, Yukon Cornelius, and the Island of Misfit Toys. It might even be fun to read one of each to compare and contrast with your kids.

Whichever version you choose, your kids will love assembling their very own reindeer treats to munch on while you read. They’re so easy to make, and most kids will be able to make them all by themselves.

  • spread – chocolate icing, cream cheese, peanut butter, or nut butter (for an allergy friendly version)
  • eyes – mini chocolate chips, raisins, mini M&Ms

How to Make your Reindeer Snacks with Kids this Christmas

Have your child choose their cracker base. If you use graham crackers, I suggest breaking them into squares (not skinny rectangles).

Children will spread their icing or nut butter on the cracker. It may be easier for small hands to use the backside (rounded side) of a spoon to spread. Just be sure they spread gently so as not to crush their crackers or break the graham cracker square in two.

Now, the children will assemble their reindeer faces. Allow them to choose two items (candies, raisins, etc.) for the eyes, one item (red candy) for the nose, and two pretzel twists for the antlers.

Finally, they can sit back and munch on their reindeer Christmas snacks while you read a version (or two) of the story.

Your crafty kids might also enjoy creating a Rudolph ornament, or Rudolph and Clarice ornaments, to hang on the Christmas tree, as well.

I am so glad that my parents did this for me growing up – favourite recipes that we cooked together, that I loved making and that I enjoyed eating that my parents made they wrote out the recipes onto a set of recipe cards added them to a recipe box and then gifted it to me when I let home. It’s a tradition that I have continued and one day I will gift the recipe boxes to my kids as well.
