Every Christmas my kids love bringing out the snow globe we got them when we first moved to the new house. The shake it up and watch the snowflakes fall.
So when I suggested that we make a Rudolph Snow Globe, to go alongside the Classic Christmas Book Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer they were really eager.

Making Snow Globes with Kids
It is possible to make snow globes out of jars however, you can now buy Snow Globe kits these are made from shatterproof plastic which when you are making with little hands is essential.
Plus after they are finished the kids will be able to play with them without you fearing that they will drop and glass will go everywhere!
If you have older kids then of course use a glass jar with a lid but toddlers, preschoolers and primary it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Top Tips & Advice for Making Your Rudolph Snow Globe
We’ve put together some of our top tips for you about making the snow globes and answering some of your common questions. If you have any more please leave them in the comments and we will reply and then add them here.
TOP TIP!
Make sure that there is as little air as possible inside the snow globe. This can be achieved by…
- Filling the globe part to the very very brim
- Then OVER A SINK put the dampened character attached to the lid inside.
- The water will displace over the edge and very little air will be trapped inside.
My Glitter Falls too Quickly How Can I SLow it DOwn in the DIY Snow Globe?
If you have used very little glycerin then the glitter added will fall quickly. The more glycerin you add the slower the glitter falls.
We are yet to discover a maximum amount that you can add to the water but using just glycerin will make it fall too slowly.
The Glitter Sticks to the Characters – How can I stop this?
This was something that we discovered quickly that unless you wet the characters before adding the glitter and water they seem to be a magnet and you have glitter-coated characters!
Wetting them beforehand seems to solve the problem so dip them in the water before you attach the lid to the globe.
Can I use Oil instead of glycerin in my Snow Globe?
NO is the short answer.
Unlike Glycerin oil does not mix with water and will form a separate layer so the glitter will become trapped. Glycerin works because it doesn’t separate in the water.
You can use just water BUT the glitter will fall really quickly – see above.
Is distilled Water Essential for the Snow Globe to Work?
We recommend that you use distilled water in the snow globes not because they won’t work without it but because over time tap water becomes cloudy due to the minerals whereas the distilled water doesn’t contain minerals and stays clear.
What is the best glue to use for the snow globes?
We have found that the best glue to use is a hot glue gun.
This allows the characters to be secured but also gives you the option of removing them if your child wants to change up the snow globes for next year or a different season.
Can you Store the Snow Globes when Finished and Bring out Next Year?
It is possible, but not something we have done!
Instead, we created this for Christmas and then as we attached the characters with hot glue they are easy to remove and then recreate for a different season throughout the year.
I’m Making these With my Toddler is there Anyway to Prevent him Unscrewing the Lid?
YES!
When you have attached the lid use some hot glue to secure the lid in place. This will prevent him from unscrewing it.
My Characters look Wonky Is There a Way to Stop this?
YES!
We found that the water and curve of the globe due to refraction made the reindeer and elf look wonky. If you place them towards the back of the lid then they look better.
Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer Snow Globe Craft for Kids
Equipment Needed
- Hot Glue Gun
Materials Needed
- Distilled water
- Glycerin
- Glitter, sequins, stars etc. White and silver tend to look best.
- Snow Globe
- Glue for your hot glue gun
- Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Waterproof characters
Instructions
- Start by gluing your characters to the snow globe stopper. A hot glue gun will work the best for kids.
- Fill your snow globe with water about halfway full.
- Add your glitter, sequins, and other snow globe decorations.
- Add your glycerin. A teaspoon should work but you can add more. See above for why this is needed
- Finish filling your snow globe with water. Check out our top tip to make sure that you fill to the top!
- Make sure the glue on your character is dry and wet your character! Then add your character on the stopper to the snow globe.
- Twist on the lid and enjoy your Rudolph snow globe!
