How Many? Questions for Dinosaur Maths

If there is a topic that my kids love its dinosaurs – from creating our own dinosaur feet to making dinosaur fossils in salt dough they love exploring and learning about these reptiles from long ago. For this month’s, Virtual Book Club for Kids we are sharing one our favourite dinosaur themed story books – or a mixed up fairy tale and exploring some simple maths activities with them. The book – the fantastic Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs by Mo Willems is a fun retelling of the Goldilocks and the Three Bears story including the porridge, chairs, and beds but with some dinosaurs thrown in.

Setting up and asking questions Dinosaur Maths

Simple to set up activities are always good and this is something that you could do whilst you were playing with the dinosaurs with the kids, or even as a starting activity and then following onto some small world Dinosaur Play.

Start off by setting up the 3 dinosaurs from the set (with choosing a T-rex dinosaur amongst our others I knew that we would be focusing on addition up to 10 and with a triceratops or stegosaurus we could work on higher 1 to 1 correspondence counting plates or parts of the fan).

With the dinosaur’s there it’s time to ask some questions

  • How many legs do the dinosaurs have on the floor in total?
  • How many eyes do they 3 dinosaurs have in total?
  • Which dinosaurs has the longest neck?
  • Which dinosaur has the shortest legs?
  • Who is the longest dinosaur?

Adapting for older children

Whilst I was playing, my eldest wanted to join in as well – these questions are great for toddlers through to kinder but he’s older but still dinosaur mad so we switched up the questions and used word problems instead e.g. If I had 3 triceratops how many horns would they have in total? Working on multiplication facts with him.
