Chinese New Year Activities for Kids (Printable Pack)

Chinese New Year is a lovely celebration to explore with children, full of colour, stories, traditions, and moments of togetherness. It’s also one of those times of year where parents can feel a little unsure where to start, especially if you want to mark the celebration without turning it into a big project. Over the years, I’ve found that most families don’t need dozens of activities. A small, thoughtful selection that can be spread over a few days is usually more than enough. This Chinese New Year printable activity pack I’ve put together with that in mind.

A simple way to explore Chinese New Year at home

This Chinese New Year printable pack is designed to give you a ready-made set of activities that work well for a range of ages. It’s the kind of resource you can dip into over a few days, choosing what suits your child or children best. There’s no expectation to complete everything. Sometimes you can use just one or two pages, while other times enjoy working through the pack across the whole celebration period.

What’s included in the Chinese New Year activity pack

The pack includes a mix of activities that encourage reading, observation, creativity, and gentle discussion:

  • Chinese New Year word search, using familiar celebration-themed vocabulary
  • Label the Dragon activity, helping children notice details and learn new words
  • Lucky red envelope craft
  • Chinese New Year timeline, showing how the celebration unfolds over several days
  • Detailed colouring page, suitable for older children as well as younger ones

Together, these activities offer a balanced way to explore the celebration without feeling overwhelming.

A quick note about printing the red envelopes

For the red envelope craft, it’s important to print this page on red paper, not white. Red is a key colour in Chinese New Year traditions and is associated with good luck and happiness. If you don’t have red paper at home, lightweight red card also works well and makes the envelopes a little sturdier for younger children.

Who this pack works well for

This printable pack is a good fit if you are:

  • looking for Chinese New Year activities that don’t require lots of preparation
  • working with mixed ages and want flexibility
  • planning a few calm activities to spread across the celebration
  • supporting learning at home or in an early years or primary classroom

It isn’t intended as a full unit study or lesson plan, but rather as a supportive resource you can use in a way that suits your family or setting.

Using this alongside other Chinese New Year activities

Many families like to pair printables with simple extras such as stories, crafts, or food. You might choose one printable activity and one hands-on activity on different days, or use the pack as a gentle structure for the week. If you’re just getting started, a single printable or game is often enough. If you’d like something more complete and ready to go, this pack brings several ideas together in one place.

A calm way to mark the Lunar New Year celebration

You don’t need to do everything to make Chinese New Year meaningful for children. A few shared activities, a little conversation, and time spent together are often what they remember most. This pack is there to support you if you’d like something ready-made, flexible, and easy to use, so you can focus on enjoying the celebration rather than planning it.
