X is for Xylophones and other musical instruments
It’s another Back to Basics of Play and this week we’re on the letter X which is for Xylophones and other musical instruments. Back to Basics is a series of play ideas for children that returns to our own childhood and is happily sponsored by Zulily UK with daily deals on gorgeous kids clothes, toys, home décor and clothes for me it’s one of my first stops every day to see what is on special offer with up to 90% off.
So back to Xylophones – or more accurately any musical instruments – whether it’s your wooden spoon band whilst you set about cooking in the kitchen with your baby/toddler occupied or your school age child learning to play a recorder musical instruments are fun, educational and for me an important part of my childhood.
I will say this now – the musical instruments aren’t out all the time with my kids – why? because the noise would drive me absolutely bonkers all of the time instead we get them out for specific play and will make music together.
In our musical instruments we have
- Play Trumpet
- Home Made musical instruments
- Pin Whistle
- Egg shakers
- Electronic Keyboard
We set about playing musical instruments with no specific purpose at the moment with T, it’s all about making noise with her, she loves experimenting with the different noises that she can make and we often use it as a sing along with some of our favourite verses.
With J we’re starting to do copy rhythms and patterns which is great but we also have a lot of fun bashing the instruments just like T. Music and dance play a big part in our every day back to basics play – check out D is for Dance, N is for Noise and V is for Verses.
