tic tac toe stars and stripes painted rocks on a board on a burlap bag all set up with neither side winning. The bag is placed on a white wooden table with some red, white and blue flowers behind

When picking rocks to use nice smooth pebbles (we love these ones) are recommended but if you wanted to make something bigger then you can find large river stones that are great so you can have a larger set to play on the lawn or out by the pool.

Please don’t collect your pebbles from the beach, they are part of the environment and important for the ecosystems.

Or how about making a set each for all of the kids – they will love to have these little keepsakes from this year’s 4th of July celebrations.

Top Tips for Painting your Stars and Stripes Rocks

As these will be handled a lot as you play there are a couple of tips for making sure that your 4th July rock painted tic tac toe set lasts.

Tip 1 – Soap and Water

Before you start it’s important that your rocks or pebbles are clean, give them a good wash in some soapy water and then dry them thoroughly.

Tip 2 – A Foam Brush

The first tip is to use a foam brush to paint the rocks with the first colour rather than using a paintbrush – leave the paintbrush for adding the fine details.

Tip 3 – Get the Right Paint

Using the right paint means that the painted game will last, acrylic paints are essential! We recommend this set as have had lots of success with them.

Tip 4 – Make the board the storage

This saves us from losing any of the stones, we create the board on the storage bag – we love these ones. Just paint the board onto the bag, if it’s extra thin then place a piece of card between the layers so it only appears on one side.
