Using LEGO to divide Syllables

I don’t know about your kids but mine love LEGO – from the duplo that they collected as toddlers and preschoolers to the now more complex sets and boxes of bricks that seem to have tripled the number of bricks that we have this year and the thing with my kids and I don’t know whether this is just them but they build to the instructions once and then the bricks get added to the boxes and from that point forward it’s invention city. Now both have moved on from the LEGO Duplo I really don’t want to get rid of it so we’re starting to use it in some learning activities. Today for our early elementary activity we’ve been working on syllables.

If you need to familairse yourself with words with 1, 2 and 3 syllables then a quick google search will bring up word lists. I used this to get a few words that we could use that we’re familiar and less familiar words.

We started out using the traditional clapping out the syllables as my eldest had been doing in school – making a noise with each new syllable is a good way to get into the habit of recognising the rhymn of words and where those syllables break in the words.

We then used the Duplo bricks to bash out the syllables which showed the number of syllables each word had.

The using a dry wipe marker we wrote the syllables onto the bricks for each word and built the words together.

  1. Love this idea. So many pre-purchased choices are sooo expensive when many families already own block, LEGO, or DUPLO. You are featured this week as part of Good Tips Tuesday!

  2. I love the idea of using a dry erase marker to write on the bricks! Such a clever way to practice syllables.

  3. What fantastic ideas and so easy to do.

    Thanks for sharing 🙂

  4. What a great idea! LEGO definitely makes learning fun and this is a great idea for kids who are learning to read.
