Skip Counting 2’s with Madeline

Growing up there was one story that I remember reading that captured my imagination and I wanted to be just like the little girl in the stories – Madeline by Ludwig Bemelmans was that story. I wanted to jump on the beds, walk in lines through Paris and break the rules just that little bit! This month’s Virtual Book Club for Kids book is Madeline and T and I have been working on skip counting inspired by the way the little girls line up in pairs in the story.

Using some of our prior knowledge of number patterns we worked on developing that to skip count the little hats of the girls in the story. This was a quick and easy DIY make for the book, however, you can buy ready-made hats in most craft stores for scrapbooking and/or card making.

Making the hats

In total you will need 12 hats – so we used a plastic drinks cup and drew around the base 12 times on a piece of yellow paper.

Then cut them out.

With the black paper, we cut a strip of the paper along the long edge and then cut into 6 small sections. To make it look like the ribbon on their hats, I snipped a triangle out of the paper.

We then glued it onto the circle to make our Madeline Hats.

Skip Counting Activity

Using our number pattern recognition or subitizing I started off by placing the hats in 2 – T quickly identified this as 2.

We then moved to 4 and 6 which were patterns that she identified.

As we were placing the hats in place from 6 onwards I got T to count the odd number in her head silently and then say out loud the even number – explain the odd number was when there was a funny pattern and the even when they were in straight lines just like when Madeline had her appendix out and there was a girl who was on her own without her matching pair.
