Winter cooking with kids – snowmen cupcakes

How to make the snowmen cupcakes

cooking with toddlers

As this time I decided to cook with both J and T I prepared all the ingredients in advance and then divided into 2 bowls so they could each have a go at the mixing stage themselves.

Adding the margarine and sugar they mixed them together. J is getting quite good at this but T needs a lot of help so she does a mix and then I do a mix (a great tip for cooking with young toddlers is to make this a fun take turns game). We then added the eggs and milk and mixed the mixture together with the vanilla and again mixed them together.

Once it was mixed the flour was added and J and T went mixing mad to get a creamy consistency. Then we had a lot of fun transferring the cake mix into the cake cases.

I preheat the oven to 180C and bake the cupcakes for 15 to 20 minutes. Once cooked remove and place to cool. Whilst they are cooling J and T played and I mixed up some icing – simple icing sugar and water – I never know exactly how much water to add so do it gradually each time adding a little water till I have a smooth but quite thick consistency.

When the cupcakes were completely cooled we set about decorating them. Pouring the icing on it filled out to the edges of the cupcakes and then adding a half a square cookie to make a hat J and T set about adding eyes with coloured candies and mouth with raisins as J decided that these looked the most like coals.

  1. Very lovely! Baking cup cakes is our favourite past-time and now my eldest is baking on her own (she’s almost 9). Lovely to see 🙂
