Sight Word Skittles Game

Our weekly sight words from school are getting harder and it’s time to start putting together some fun activities to help J learn them. As one of his targets is also working on hand eye co-ordination this sight word game made from items out of our junk modelling box and some home-made bean bags works on both levels.

Sight Word Game – Skittles

What you need

Cardboard Tubes (the longer ones for kitchen paper are better than the shorter ones) – as many as words you have to learn (7 in our case)
Bean Bag or soft ball
Card
Black Marker Pen

Word list

How to make

Sight Word Skittles

Take the card and fold and cut to make 8 small cards and write on these your words. Between 6 and 8 sight words at a time is a good number to work on and provides a nice number of skittles.

Snip a small way into the top of the cardboard tube and repeat on the opposite side of the top to make two slots to hold the sight word card in place.

Playing the Game

Place the skittles at the end of a room – arrange them so that all of the skittles can be seen and it’s less likely that a skittle will be hit if aiming at the skittle behind.

Sight Word Skittles

Stand a distance away with your child (make the judgement how far based on your child’s accuracy at throwing and strength of throw).

Sight Word Skittles Game

Version 1 – Choose a word on the skittles and ask your child to point to it and then aim and try and hit it.

Version 2 – Get your child to name the sight word that they are going to aim at and then hit it.
