Rabbit Food Lettuce Wrap – Cooking with Kids

There are some books that a childhood wouldn’t be complete without reading and this month’s Virtual Book Club for Kids book is one of those. The Tale of Peter Rabbit is a classic kids story that stands the test of time and all this month over on my social media networks I will be sharing ideas to bring this wonderful story alive in the home or classroom. As the 1st of the month falls on a Tuesday which is our recipe day we’re sharing a simple Rabbit Food Lettuce Wrap which is perfect to make with kids.

Ingredients Needed

Large Leafed Lettuce – we used Iceberg

Carrots

Tomatoes

Cucumber

Any protein-based food you have in the fridge – ham and cheese were added to our wrap.

Cerys from Rainy Day Mum cooking with her young son J at the dinning room table. They have a bowl infront of them and J is leaning over the bowl looking at the ingredients that Cerys is mixing. Both are wearing kitchen aprons and there is a rolling pin on the table.

Step by Step Lettuce Wrap

Simple and easy meals and snacks that kids can create themselves that are healthy are always good and this is really simple to make. It also let the kids have a go at using a knife – we love our safety knife that is sharp enough to cut through carrot’s but safe for kids to use as well – it’s from the company Pampered Chef but was brought a few years ago – do have a look at it as it’s ideal for cooking with kids.

We started off with talking about what food Peter Rabbit would steal from Mr McGregor’s garden in the book – and put together a list of fruit and vegetables that they thought he would like and then raided the fridge.

Using a potato peeler J peeled a carrot and then we used our grater and grated it up.

He then cut up a tomato and cucumber.

Laying some lettuce flat on the worktop we piled on the rabbit food on top.

Then talked about what we would like in our lettuce wraps as we weren’t rabbits – J who loves learning about animals pointed out we were omnivores which T pointed out meant we eat meat and vegetables.

So they raided the fridge again and found some protein that we could add with cheese and ham.

They then rolled up the lettuce as if it was a tortilla wrap and cut it in half.

  1. BIG sigh! I am having such a hard time with my daughter and veggies, but this could be something that she could possibly enjoy, especially if she helps in creating it. I should probably buy some Peter rabbit books and up the ante! Great pics Cerys, it really brought the blog post to life

  2. What a fun way to connect to the book. My kids would love to make their own wrap.

  3. I love this idea! My kids eat veggies, but I’m always looking for new fun ways to fix them–nobody wants them the same way all the time, lol!
