Christmas Tree Pine Cone Craft for Kids

Crafts from natural materials are one of my favourites and with so many pine cones collected from walks this fun and quick Christmas Craft to make a Pom Pom Pine Cone Christmas Tree is great fun for the kids. You can keep the tree plain or like we have painted it to make it more tree-like. So here you go an easy Christmas Craft for Kids to make a simple Pine Cone and Pom Pom Christmas Tree.

Pine Cone Ornaments

Pine Cones make a fantastic base for Christmas Ornaments and decorations. Their shape mimics that of Christmas Trees so for kids you can easily and quickly turn them into mini trees like this craft and our pipe cleaner Pine Cone craft.

In this craft though, we’re making it even easier and using small pom poms to decorate our Christmas Tree.

In our version we have used primary colours of pom poms but you could use sparkley ones or even glitter versions to spruce up your trees.

Pom Poms are great for crafts and activities with kids. They come in different sizes which when you have so many different sizes of pine cones means you can find a few that will fit the spaces you have.

The added bonus is that once your paint is dry your kids will have to pick up and fit in them to these spaces. It’s a great way to work on fine motor skills and that essential pincer grip that they will need later for holding a pencil and writing.

We’ve chosen to glue ours in place so that we can bring them out year after year, but if you are wanting something a little less messy and that can be reused you can set this up for them to put the “ornaments” (pom poms) on the tree and take them off again as an activity over Christmas.

What Paint to use for Pine Cone Ornaments

When chosing the paint to use bear in mind that both an acrylic craft paint like Apple Barrel Craft Paint and a washable paint like Crayola works but the washable paint will need a couple of layers to get a vibrant colour.

You could paint the tree in advance yourself using an acrylic craft paint which means you can keep the mess to a minimum.

However, half the fun of this craft is to paint it. So instead I recommend with toddlers and preschoolers you use a washable paint (go for a more expensive brand e.g. Crayola as the paint will be thicker and better coverage). Then do 2 layers, it doesn’t take long to dry in between and doesn’t need to be fully dry before applying the second layer.
