Pete the Cat – White Shoes literacy activities

This months Virtual Book Club for Kids featured author is Eric Litwin and between the bloggers we are featuring 3 books. Pete the Cat and his four groovy buttons (affiliate Link), Pete the cat rocking in my school shoes and Pete the Cat I love my white shoes (affiliate link), as Eric Litwin is a new author to us we checked out all of his books and apart from having songs in my head for days and humming in meetings they are fantastic books especially for preschoolers.  Today we’ve chosen Pete the Cat; I love my white shoes (affiliate link) as we are working on colours with T but I thought it would be great to work on some literacy activities with her.

Pete the Cat; I love my white shoes has great rhythm and rhyme to the book, with fantastic illustrations by James Dean it’s perfect for young children. It focuses on 4 colours, white, red, blue and brown and has a fantastic song in the book. To find the tune we looked on you tube and found the Eric Litwin reading of the book. Using these colours and the idea of shoes we put together a fun activity to work on 3 letters, her name and reviewing colour knowledge.

Materials needed

A shoe
White, Brown, Blue, Red Cardstock
Scissors
Pencil
Magnetic Letters

Literacy with Pete the Cat; I love my white shoes

We started off by drawing around a shoe – each paper was big enough to draw two shoes which worked well for our first game of matching colour pairs to reinforce colours.

Once T had drawn around the shoes she then set about cutting them out – she’s 3 and a half and we are working on scissor skills having a line to cut around at the moment she tends to cut outside of the line but occasionally cuts straight across.

Once our shoe prints were cut out we first matched them up, brown to brown, blue to blue etc…

I got out 3 magnetic letters, a W, B and a R and I went over the letter sounds as well as matching colour names with those sounds.

We then matched the letter sound to the colour shoe print, R to Red, B to Blue or Brown and W to White.

I then wrote the names of the colours on the shoes and got her to point out the letter matching the magnetic letter, then to point out letters in her name.

With the letters in her name as inspiration I turned the shoe prints over and then wrote a letter of her name on each shoe print and mixed them up. She then put them in order to spell her name.
