Mo Willems nut free alphabet cookies – Duckling gets a Cookie

Mo Willems is fast becoming one of our favourite authors and I am delighted that we kick off this school years Virtual Book Club for Kids with 3 books by him to share with your children and create and connect activities based around them. The three books that you will find activities shared by are Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!, Knuffle Bunny, The Duckling Gets a Cookie!?

Our favourite of these is Duckling Gets a Cookie and we’ve had fun reading through the book and bringing it life with a cookie based activity perfect for the duckling. If you are new to Mo Willems and the Pigeon books then these are perfect for preschoolers and you to read together and we’re using them with J who is emerging as a reader and has started to read the books to us as well The Duckling gets a Cookie is about a poliet little duckling who asks very nicely for a cookie and gets one with nuts – along comes pigeon a recurrent character for Mo Willems books and gets upset that he hasn’t got the cookie and asks “Why the duckling should have one and he hasn’t?”.

Reading the book with T we discussed cookies or biscuits as we call them in the UK, one of her favourite types of biscuits is a chocolate chip one with small nuts and looks very similar to the cookie that the duckling has and doesn’t really like because he doesn’t like nuts which lead us to maybe we should make some cookies for the book.

Over the year I have some objectives that I want to focus on through play and books with T one of them being learing her alphabet so creating some alphabet cookies seemed a good start, I suggested we try making some peanut butter cookies but it was quickly pointed out that these wouldn’t be good for the duckling as the duckling doesn’t like Nuts and only wants to eat cookies with no nuts – so here’s our Nut Free Alphabet Cookies especially for the Duckling.

Nut and Egg Free Alphabet Cookies Ingredients

4oz of Butter or Soft Margarine
2oz of Caster (fine) Sugar
6oz of Plain (all purpose) Flour

Ziplock Bag
Rolling Pin
Baking Paper
Alphabet Cookie Cutters

Weigh the Butter/Margarine out and add to a large bowl, weigh and add in the sugar and mix together to form a creamy pale soft mixture. I like using a baking mat below our mixing bowl as this prevents the bowl slipping ideal when cooking with preschoolers.

Weigh the flour and add to the mix and stir in – initally it will form a bread crumb like consitency but as you mix more a dough with start to form.

Using hands form a dough ball and transfer out and knead on a lightly floured surface.

Place the dough into a ziplock bag and place in the fridge for at least 30 minutes this will harden it up a bit and make it easier to roll and cut.

When you are ready preheat the oven to 180C/350F and lightly flour a surface and rolling pin.

Roll out the dough mixture and start cutting out the alphabet using the cookie cutters – we started off by cutting the letters in alphabetic order and then made extra’s of the letters of T’s name and my name so we could also make name cookies to have for snack later in the day.

Place on a baking tray with baking paper this will make sure that the cookies don’t stick during baking.

Place in the oven for a maximum of 10 minutes – we have a fan assisted oven and as the cookies were thin at times I only put them in for 8 minutes.

Take out and cool on a rack and then enjoy whilst reviewing the letter as well as reading Duckling Got a Cookie.
