Kids in the Kitchen – BBQ Skewers

Summer for us means a change of cooking style and diet – one of the big changes is our Sunday Family dinner changes from a traditional roast to grilling on the BBQ. Today we’re sharing our BBQ spice recipe and getting the kids to make some quick and easy BBQ skewers as part of the Kids in the Kitchen Series organised by Study at home Mama.

BBQ Spice Recipe

Ingredients

1/4 cup of sea salt 2 tablespoons garlic powder 2 tablespoons onion powder 4 tablespoons dried oregano 2 tablespoons paprika 1 tablespoon freshly ground black pepper 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper (you can add more for your taste) Kilner Storage Jar [affiliate link]

Method

Measure out the spices into the Kilner Storage Jar [affiliate link] and make sure that it is sealed and shake. To spice is best used to marinade meat for around an hour before cooking. It can be used as a rub or sprinkled over with a little oil to make a marinade.

Making up the BBQ Skewers

We started off by cutting up the chicken breasts into chunks. I have brought safety knives for the kids which are great for fruit and vegetables but with meat I’ve found that the easiest way for them to chop it up is to use scissors so they cut the chicken into chunks. We then chopped up the bell peppers and formed piles of the different ingredients. BBQ spice recipe and simple skewers that kids can make as well. We make these most weekends as an alternative to the normal burgers and sausages which are typical on BBQ’s in the UK. Instead, they have a bit more vegetables on them and cover a few more of our 5 a day. The kids them sprinkle on the BBQ spices or leave them plain depending on their preference at the time. My husband prefers them with the spice. BBQ spice recipe and simple skewers that kids can make as well. Ideal Summer recipe to throw on the grill

We then either use the grill or the BBQ and cook them until done and serve with salad or how about trying Study at Home Mama rice which will be perfect for a more filling meal.
