Fossil Sensory Bin
The first week of our storybook summer 2015 is over and we’ve loved sharing the amazing Dinosaur books and ideas to bring them alive for your kids, from creating your own dinosaur feet, to investigating how one of the predators attacked in a dinosaur science experiment there has been some fabulous ideas shared by guest bloggers this week. We love BOOKS at my house! We can never have enough of them and we love finding new ones to read. We also read our favorites over and over until the kids know what word comes next. Story time has always been a big deal to me since I was the mom of one. Now as the mom of three, story time is still a must. Now big brother is able to help read the books too.. I love being able to take turns reading the books with him. Recently we got a new book The Berenstain Bears’ Dinosaur Dig [affiliate link]. The kids love dinosaurs and could not wait to open the book and read the story inside. After reading the book I had an idea for a book extension. The dino dig activity was a big hit with my kids. We had a fun day reading and playing.

How to setup a dino dig for the kids:
Add sand to a plastic bin to start. Next, take all the dinosaur fossils and hide them in the sand. Set out some shovels and paint brushes.
Once the setup is complete have the kids come out for playtime. The kids could not wait to try out their own dino dig. After reading about a dino dig in the book they really wanted to try one. With this little bin and a few other supplies they got to feel just like the characters in the book.
The 3 kids took turns brushing sand away and digging with the shovel. When they would uncover a dinosaur fossil they would get so excited. After they found them all they covered them over again. Now they could keep finding the dinosaur fossils over and over again.
We love reading books and we love finding fun ways to bring those books to life afterwards. The dino dig was the perfect activity for our new book, The Berestain Bears Dino Dig. We look forward to exploring more fun dinosaur inspired activities from this book.

Hello, Cerys, I remember when my boys were smaller they loved all the games where it was necessary to hide and discover things. The idea of dinosaur remains digging is great I am just not sure how much time they would spend with always same objects (bones, skeletons, etc) we always had to change the objects to make it more attractive…
Now they are 13, 9 and 6 and they love anything star wars, minecraft, zombies and ninja. No digging of stuff anymore 🙂
