Crayon Shaving Sun Catchers

For some reason when I started Rainy Day Mum I quickly became known as a “crafter” yes I do love to craft but as you can probably tell by heading to our homepage crafts are not really a big part of our activities. We do love to create and get creative but I tend not to share everything here – you can get glimpses over on our Instagram Feed of lots of the activities though. But now once a month we’re getting creative and using some art material in a more process art activity and today’s theme is Crayons. The kids love using crayons, they colours are vibrant and the effects that we have tried in the past like our Wax Resist Pond they have loved to reveal. This time we decided to take into account that wax melts and used this to create some art work for the windows.

Creating Crayon Shaving Sun Catchers

I have a thing with wax crayons I like our set in the art caddy to be whole – so any broken crayons get put into a container which I have all sorts of plans for. Using that contain the kids started off by selecting a range of colours and stripping off the paper from around the outside.

Whilst they did that I cut the wax paper – 2 pieces each into around about paper size pieces and gave everyone 1 piece to start with.

Then we got shaving the crayons with the pencil sharpeners. The kids discovered that if you hold the sharpener upside down then you can collect the shavings quicker and more come out.

We shaved and placed the shavings around the wax paper from the middle outwards.

Once they had had enough of shaving we then spread the crayons shaving around mixing up the colours into a real rainbow of differences.

With the shavings in place, I heated up the Iron on medium heat. Placing an old tea-towel on the surface and then some paper towel we laid the piece of paper with the crayon shavings on over the top. Then their 2nd piece of wax paper over the top of that.

I then added a set of paper towels and irons the shaving for around about 20 – 30 seconds until I could see the paper towel picking up some of the wax colour through.

Leaving them to cool – once cooled the kids and I cut out a variety of shapes

We hole punched the shapes – smaller shapes once, and bigger shapes at the top and bottom.

Then threaded the cotton thread through to make them hang.

Using a window sucker hook we attached them into our family room where we spend a lot of the time especially in the afternoon where the sun shines through the window.

  1. oh i do like these and always think of you as a crafter!

  2. I have to admit we tried making sun catchers with our wax crayon shavings but came to one problem – I don’t own any wax paper. I do own freezer paper though. I spent ages googling to see what the difference between the two papers were. In the end I tried it on a small piece of freezer paper but it didn’t work very well. Wax paper is now on our shopping list! Pinned and clipped.

  3. This is whaat wee were going to do too! I have sceduled it in for later in the week!
