Button Box ABC Creations

I don’t know whether it’s just me but I love buttons. My mum and grandmothers all had a button box when I was growing up and I have carried on the tradition. All the buttons that come extra with clothes go into that box as do buttons from clothes that have worn out as well as any that I see for sale and really catch my eye. Running my fingers through them as a child was one of my favourite things to do when the box was brought out and now as an adult I frequently jump into the box – a teddy needs a new eye, no problem I have a button that will do that, the buttons that come with a top are boring – I can change them up. This month’s book for the Virtual Book Club for Kids Corduroy by Don Freeman and the young girl Lisa fixing him with a button inspired us to bring out the button box and work on our ABC’s.

Use buttons to create letters to help young children to recognise the shapes and names of the letters as they build each letter themselves.

Making Button Box ABC Creations

We started off reviewing our letters and identifying them then we got creating.

I would say out a letter and using the buttons from the button box T would create the letters. I found it a useful exercise to do with her as I discovered that she was reversing her a’s as well as confusing b and d. I now know that we need to do some extra practice on these letters.

Suggestions for younger children

Print out the Basic Alphabet outlines and using small buttons get them to place the buttons within the outlines – if you want bigger letters then you can scan in and print them out bigger. This is great for working on letter recognition at the same time as working on fine motor skills and a little pre-writing as you can encourage them to create the letters in the order that the writing would go.

Extension Idea

Using the button why not create some sensory cards – using super tacky tape – USA Double Sided Super Sticky Tape – UK afix the letters to strong card stock and create your own sensory alphabet (similar to how our DIY sensory Alphabet with glitter card works).

  2. I adore buttons – they’re all different whether they be shiny, old, new etc.
My mum and her grandma always had button boxs as well so it’s something that I naturally started for myself when I was a child.
Lily is a bit young for this but I think I might make her something for her wall ready for when she starts learning her ABCs – maybe a wall hanging with the letters made from buttons?
    Thanks for the inspiration.
