Simple Butterfly Craft for Toddlers

Thanks to Nurture Store via their facebook feed this morning a great idea that matches in with one of J’s favourite books The Very Hungry Caterpillar. So we did it the Rainy Day Mum way this afternoon whilst the heavens opened and T slept.

What you need to make some easy Toddler Butterflies

Some plain strong paper (first butterflies I made with lightweight paper was a mistake)
Selection of different coloured paints – we used ELC Bright finger paints
Container for decanting paint into
Sticky Tape
Messy Mat and Apron

How to make the easy toddler butterflies

Homemade Paint Pallete

With J I always prepare as much as possible in advance so that we don’t have any impatient waiting around. I decanted 6 coloured paints into the plastic cake container and cut out 3 butterfly shapes by folding the paper in half drawing half a butterfly and then cutting it out.

You only need to have half of the butterfly exposed for painting so to prevent little fingers from opening them up I taped the body of the butterfly down onto his high chair tray and the lower wing then covered everything in sight and let him loose with the paint.

Once he had finished and asked for the next butterby (J’s word for butterflies) I took them off the high chair tray and folded them back on themselves to create a print. I then hung them up to dry.
