How to Make Bubble Art

Summer Fun Art Activity for Kids
Summer makes art projects at home with the kids so much easier. Just take your art outside and get creative. You can lay down some drop cloth to protect your patio or lawn. However, this bubble art is just water and dish soap with a little food colouring so you are good to go.
It is simple to set up and you can create so many different patterns and colours that your young children and older kids will all have loads of fun.

What you need to make Bubble Prints
- Bowl or dish
- Washing up Liquid (Dish Soap) or bubble mixture (our homemade bubble solution works great for this!
- Food Colouring/liquid watercolors
- Straw or bubble wand
- Water
- Paper – watercolor paper works best but regular paper will do.
- Small bowls
How to Make Bubble Print Pictures
- Put about 1/2 cup of washing-up liquid (dish soap) into the bowl and add a few tablespoons of water to make a strong bubble solution to use.
- Mix together to form a layer of bubbles.
- Add a few drops of food coloring (or liquid watercolors) to the bubbles.
- Then using the plastic straw or bubble wand to blow. Make sure children don’t suck up the mixture.
- When the bubbles are near the surface gently place the paper on the top of the bubbles to capture the imprint of bubbles popping.
Fun Process Art Activity for Summer
This is such a great process art activity, you can see by the look on my youngests face how much fun she had creating the simple prints with the larger bubbles and smaller bubbles onto the paper.
There’s no reason you can’t just leave it like that. However, you can always tune these fun art creations into something more. With watercolour paper or even card stock used to create the prints then you could create some beautiful cards and gift cards or even bookmarks for a summer reading challenge.
Using food coloring like this produces a very weak bubble print but the fun is making the bubbles and trying to capture the prints before the bubbles disappear. If you would like to make a stronger bubble imprint then washable tempera paint is great to make a more vibrant bubble paint solution.

How to Make Bubble Paint for Summer Art
Equipment Needed
- Small bowls for each colour
- Plastic Straws or reusable ones that can be easily washed
Materials Needed
- ½ cup dish soap
- water
- food colouring in a variety of colors liquid watercolours and washable tempera paint work as well.
- paper watercolor paper works really well but regular paper will do as well.
Instructions
- Mix the water and dish soap together to create a strong bubble solution.
- Separate into bowls for each colour of food coloring your have.
- Using a a straw blow into the mixture to create colourful bubbles of different sizes.
- When the bubbles meet the top take the paper and press lightly onto the bubbles and make them pop.
- Remove and observe your bubble prints.
